False Indigo bush is a loose, airy shrub which often forms dense thickets. The plants develop a leggy character with fine textured foliage on the upper third of the plant. The leaflets are velvety on the lower surface. Flowers on this shrub are small, purple to dark blue with yellow stamens extending beyond the single petal. It is a North American Native which often forms thickets on riverbanks and islands, it can be weedy or invasive in the northeast.
