Panicum virgatum is a major grass found in the Midwest. It is a beautiful garden plant with a striking fall color. Panicum virgatum is the bluest form of all the prairie grasses. It has an upright growth habit and can reach up to 3 feet when the seed heads are in bloom. It is relatively easy to grow in various conditions such as; dry, moist, sun, hot, and it tolerates clay, infertile and sandy soils. Switchgrass looks amazing when it is covering large areas of the landscape, eliminating the need for fertilizing and mowing. Switchgrass thrives almost maintenance free and it provides food and shelter for birds and wildlife.
