Canada Red is a variety of chokecherry that is a beautiful small tree adored for its color and irregular toothed leaves. The leaves are dark green to reddish purple. During mid spring a profusion of fragrant white flowers appear. The blossoms then produce pea-sized red berries that ripen to dark purple-black in late summer. It attracts birds and other wildlife. The berries are tart when raw but can be harvested for processing into jams and sauces.
