Purple leaf sand cherry is an upright deciduous shrub or it can be trained as a small tree. It is most noted for its reddish purple foliage that retains good color throughout the summer. It has ovate-elliptical leaves with serrate margins that have a distinctive and attractive reddish purple. There are also fragrant solitary white flowers with pink tints blooming in spring after the foliage emerges. The flowers then give way to an often meager production of small blackish purple fruits. The fruits are very attractive to birds.
